Report for Experiment 6 – Dichlorocarbene Addition to Alkenes

Introduction and Experimental Procedure: State the scientific purpose(s) of the experiment. Also provide an overview of cyclopropanation reactions with carbenes in a general sense (not your specific reactions). Describe the methods used. Give a brief general statement/description of the procedure and reference (as a footnote or an endnote) the experiment handout on the CH241 website. Avoid discussing specific data. Describe any changes from the written procedure (if any).

 

Results and Discussion : Write a series of paragraphs that include Figures/Tables to clearly present data. Include ChemBioDraw structures as needed to help the reader understand your results and discussion Your paragraphs should be as cohesive as possible (each paragraph should lead into the next, as opposed to a series of statements on independent topics).

 

Table “templates” are included if you wish to use them (or you can make your own). When citing results r efer to each Table/Figure with an explicit reference as necessary (e.g. see Table 1) in the relevant part of this section. Remember to include units.

 

In your cohesive discussion, make sure to include the following items and topics. Please erase the bullets from the list below when you erase the italicized words.

 

         Draw the mechanism for the formation and reaction of dichlorocarbene using ChemBioDraw and appropriate curved-arrow formalism. Make sure to include the formation of the carbene, as well as its subsequent reaction to form the observed product(s).

         Present and discuss the results of your cyclopropanation experiment. How did the spectral data help you identify the identity and stereochemistry of the products?

         Present and discuss the results of your Spartan calculations. What do the bond lengths and angles tell you about the structures? Are there theoretical or literature values for comparison that might give you insight about the hybridization states and other properties?

         What was the role of the catalyst (the TEBA )?

         How did the experimental results allowed you to determine the spin state of dichlorocarbene? How do your experimental results compare to your Spartan calculations?

 

Conclusion: Approx. 2-5-sentences. Summarize the purpose of the experiment. Describe whether the experiment was successful (from your point of view), and what was learned/accomplished by carrying out the experiment.

 

 

Attachments: Attach your 1 H NMR spectrum and GC/MS data from your reaction. Make sure to label your attachments (such as “Figure 1. Relevant caption for the attachment”) and remember to refer to them in the Results and Discussion section of your lab report. Labels on attachments can be hand written if needed.
