Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has affected millions of people around the world. According to the a 2008 World Health Organization study* more than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981, and that number is increasing every day. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has especially affected Sub-Saharan Africa where, according to the same WHO study, 5% of adults are living with HIV. This section of the site should introduce students to the issues facing Africa because of HIV/AIDS, especially those connected to the continents world image and economic role.
