Canyon Defense

Name of the game: Canyon Defense

Game platform: Computer (miniclip.com)

Write a brief description of the game

The goal of the game is to place different weapons on the grid (missile turret, anti-air gun, etc.) to shoot destroy the enemies and keep them from reaching the end of the course. The enemies come in waves, starting very easy and progressively getting harder and having more health. Each time you destroy an enemy, you get coins, which you can use to buy more turrets and other weapons to destroy the enemies. There are mini missions that unlock new weapons that are more powerful but also cost more money. There are 30 waves of enemy vehicles that come and in between each you have time to add more weapons on the grid. In addition, some waves have air vehicles, which require specific weapons to hit them. To win, you must not allow more than 10 enemies to reach the other side through the 30 waves.

What are the objective and subjective goals of the game?

The objective goal of this game is to teach strategy to the user and to think ahead to future turns. The subjective goal is to prevent the vehicles from making it across the grid.

Describe the game interface. What controls are available to the user, and what aspects of the game do they control?

As the player, you control where you want to place the weapons on the map, using your mouse. The computer controls which vehicles are in the waves.

What is the game's genre? Does it follow the rules for the genre? Does it have any unique characteristics relative to other games in the genre?

The genre is “shoot em’ up” and “strategy”. I would say this follows the characteristics of primarily strategy games because you control how you want to spend the money and what weapons you want and where. In addition, you are given 2 minutes if needed to adjust what you have on the map. Lastly, there is some reaction abilities because as the wave is coming, you can add more weapons on the map if you have money.

How many different images are used in the game?

There are upwards of 20 images used in the game. The map remains constant, and there are 15 weapons that you can use and each has its own image. In addition, each vehicle has its own image. Lastly, there are images for the number of lives, coins for the money and in the place of weapons that you have not unlocked, there is a lock image in the place, letting you know you cannot use it yet.

How many of the images move during gameplay, and how much of the screen do the moving images occupy?

During the gameplay, the enemy vehicles move across the screen and the weapons move to point towards the vehicles that they are shooting at.

What are the major challenges of the game?

The major challenges of the game are deciding which weapons you want. You can either opt for the less expensive weapons but have more of them or the more expensive ones but have less. In addition, you need to keep in mind that there are also air vehicles and allocate some of your money towards weapons that can hit them.

What is the complexity of the ruleset?

The rules are very simple. You just have to drag the weapon to a valid spot on the grid and it will tell you when you cannot but a weapon due to not having enough coins.

What kind of competition/interaction/conflict exists?

It is a single-player, so you are playing against the computer. While you control the weapons on the grid, the computer gives you challenges each round of what vehicles it sends out. Also the vehicles can react to weapons being shot at them, so they can be out of range of some guns.

Slither.io

 Name of the game: Slither.io

Game platform: Android, Web browser, iOS, Windows 10

Write a brief description of the game

The user controls a snake which can be moved around to eat orbs. The more orbs that are eaten the larger the snake becomes. There are other competitor snakes around and these snakes attempt to collide with you in such a way that your head collides with their bodies. If they are able to do this, your snake dies and the competitor snake gets to eat your orbs. However, if you get the competing snake’s head to collide with your body, the snake dies and you get to eat its orbs which in return make you larger.

What are the objective and subjective goals of the game?

The objective goal is for the user to have fun playing with other players around the world. The subjective goal is to kill other snakes before they kill you and to become the biggest snake in the server.

Describe the game interface. What controls are available to the user, and what aspects of the game do they control?

The user uses the mouse to control the direction that the snake moves in. The user can click on the mouse to give the snake a boost in speed. However, the boost in speed decreases the size of the snake so this must be used wisely.

What is the game's genre? Does it follow the rules for the genre? Does it have any unique characteristics relative to other games in the genre?

The genres are action and casual game. The game does follow the rules for the genres since the user can choose to be aggressive and attack other snakes or to simply grow by eating orbs. It does have unique characteristics in that one must attack using the body of the snake which is not stereotypical of action games.

How many different images are used in the game?

There can be many images in the screen including the snake, orbs, the map, and the background. Other images include other snakes.

How many of the images move during gameplay, and how much of the screen do the moving images occupy?

All of the images in the game move, including the background, the map (which changes as you move), the snakes, and the snake. There the moving images take the entire screen.

What are the major challenges of the game?

The major challenge is trying to survive from the attacks of other snakes and trying to become a decent size to be on the leaderboard.

What is the complexity of the rule set?

Not very complex. You have to eat orbs to become bigger and you must force collision with your body in order to kill other snakes. You must also be of decent size to be able to boost your speed.

 What kind of competition/interaction/conflict exists?

There exists competition I'm that you must try to be on the leaderboard. Interaction in that you are forced to share the map and orbs with other snakes. This creates conflict in that you or other snakes collide with each other to become bigger.
