This research focuses on the impact of modernization and globalization on China's transportation system. China's increasing industrial power has led to rapidly changing lifestyles; an understanding of these changes is crucial for our understanding of China's social culture in the present day. In this research project, I explore China's emergence as a modern superpower through its transformation of its transportation system. By observing and taking pictures of highways, commercial streets, and alley roads in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuhan, and conducting interviews, I will document the changes in China's public transportation in the most recent years. More specifically, this research project will focus on three areas: 1) opinions of people of different generations on various means of transportation and in particular their views on the disappearance of bicycles and the rise of private cars in a fast-changing China; 2) advertisements of vehicles from bicycles to private luxury cars through media; 3) comparing the use of traditional vehicles (bicycles) versus modern vehicles (private cars and taxi) in four distinctive cities.
