Hey guys. I do not question 9 on the practice exam. Aren't we supposed to use the fact that there is an unpaired electron to explain  the paramagnetism of aluminium?

    Yes, that's correct. The answer provided demonstrates this ... using MO theory, the paramagnetism of Al2 dictates that the Pi2p orbitals must be of lower energy than the Sigma2p. In that configuration, there are unpaired electrons.
